What is RSS?

RSS Feed - Your Unobstructed Information Pipeline!

A RSS feed is your information delivery system without spam or Internet provider (IP) filters. You access information you requested directly with a program called a RSS feed reader or news aggregator via your browser.

RSS, stands for Really Simple Syndication, is an eye-opening useful tool that delivers your requested information to your doorstep. Example, you can choose to bring news you select from all over the world. That’s why feed readers are also called news aggregator.

Once you signup on a feed (easy), preempted content of your choosing comes directly to your browser's RSS newsfeed reader/news aggregator. No more visiting each of your favorite websites to find information which is now automatically delivered to you. Of course, I will cry if you don’t visit us once in a while. J

Talk about saving time. Now you can sleep in.

Imagine having 1, 2, or 100 sites delivering content automatically for-your-eyes-only. It’s a steady flow of information at your fingertips to do with as you please. No spam. You can ignore or even disconnect your feed at anytime. Each feed you choose is a direct, one-way line from “them” to "you".

Whenever you see an orange RSS logo    XML, it’s a sign you can subscribe to a RSS feed. Be aware that many sites artistically design their own color-combo RSS icon. It’s still a RSS feed.

What’s really cool is whenever there is a site with an RSS feed, browsers like Firefox can sense the feed and initiate your RSS signup automatically. All you have to do is decide if you want any information from this site.

RSS feed is digital information on a platter. That’s slick.

So where can get a RSS feed reader? Glad you asked.

Three Web Browsers with Free RSS Feed Readers

Alphabetically...

Firefox 2.x has a RSS icon next to the Google search bar which looks like a folded newspaper. When Firefox senses a RSS feed, it automatically activates an orange seashell shaped icon labeled “Subscribe”. It changes from a dull, washed out icon to bright orange. To subscribe, just click on the orange shell. Firefox is free.

Microsoft Explorer (ie7 rss) has a built-in, auto-sensing RSS reader/news aggregators. The icon is located on the right side, next to the print icon. It is a new feature in Microsoft Explorer 7.

Opera 9.2 has a “Feeds” button built into the menu bar. You activate a dropdown menu by left clicking on “Feeds” and then choose either “Read feeds” or “Manage feeds”. For those just starting out, it’s the simplest implementation of a RSS newsfeed reader I have come across. By offering menu options, it gives you step-by-step control, allowing you to select your next action. Opera is free.

They all do the job well. Which do I use? Firefox. Habit. Easy. Auto-sensing.
