Unusual Tip #4: How to
Regroup During Your Job Interview
Should you notice you’re job
interview is getting out of sync, slowdown, breath slowly, pull in on your verbal diarrhea and refocus. When we get too nervous we tend to
babble or even worse shutdown, both poor options. Being nervous is natural and even expected. Don’t try to compensate by being emotionally too
cold. You’ll come across distant and disinterested.
Need time to regroup? Redirect
attention on the interviewer. This is the perfect time to ask a question. Then resynchronize yourself as you listen.
Unusual Tip #5: The Danger of Importance
The more important a prospective
job, the greater the likelihood of having sync issues. Why? Being interested means you have something to loose. The thought of loosing a
desirable job can play on your nerves. Wants drive desires which fuel emotions. So how can you
learn to control your desire driven emotions when so much is at stake?
Prepare for your interview by testing
your verbal/nonverbal balance under stress.
How? Practice. Practice
interviewing with friends, relative, trusted colleagues. Or practice by yourself, out loud, in front of a mirror.
Dressing for your mock job interview is a must. You must not play the part; you must be the
part. Ever hear of a “dress rehearsal”? You must make your mock interview look and feel as real as possible.
For best results, to actually see
yourself in action, video your mock interviews. Equally important, you also need an audio pickup. Then replay and constructively criticize.
Repeat until you look “together”. Don’t be kind to yourself.
Who said getting a great job was
going to be easy. Only you can decide what you are willing to do to get that job. Period.
Unusual Tip #6: This is Not
Bologna
If you think that this nonverbal
stuff is nonsense, think again.
Did you know that John Gottman, a
University of Washington psychologist, is able to assess with 90% accuracy whether a couple’s marriage will last by merely viewing a 15 minute
video of the couple’s interaction. His accuracy increases to a scary 95% when assessing them for 1 hour. Most of his conclusions are based on
body language. A professor colleague, Sybil Carrere, found that a 3 minute window is almost as accurate. For more, read…
“Blink, The Power of Thinking Without Thinking”
by Malcolm Gladwell.
Is your job interview performance
any less vulnerable? If this doesn’t put your nonverbal actions into focus, nothing will.
Summary
Prepare meticulously for your job
interview questions and answers by keeping your interview words in sync with your interview body language. Be
convincing.
