by Charles Ethos
Did you make a robust first impression in Step
1? No missteps, no dropped baton, with a pleased interviewer? Great! If you need to review Step
1, reread “How to Impress During Those Critical First 60-Seconds of Your Job
Interview”.
Step 2: Is About an Inquisition -
Answering Interview Question Convincingly
With your successful first impression behind you,
you are moving into the next phase of your job interview process, tackling your job interview questions and answers.
Some clarification: Some will argue that referring to Step 2 as an inquisition seems harsh. Is it? On the softer side some prefer to call an interview “selling
you”. It sounds so much more civilized. I don’t know about you but the few times I was interviewed my nerves told me that I was being drilled
for answers. How about you?
6 Unusual Tips to Help You Handle Interview
Questions
Unusual Tip #1: Why Answering Questions May only be 7% of The
Story
Many, if not most, articles and
books target interview questions as your toughest interview step. Okay, it is tough. On the other hand:
- It’s the one step most people find easiest to prepare for, given all
the available free and commercial material.
- It is also the step which you tend to practice the most.
- It’s the easiest step to instantly help boost your
confidence.
- Learning and practicing job interview questions and answers provides
a sense of control.
Because you can find so much
material about answers to job interview questions in libraries, bookstores, publications, and the Internet,
I’ll let you tackle this on your own. Because…
While emphasizing answers,
because you can’t see your interview body language at work, your body language may blindside your interview.
Ironically, your interviewer can always see your body language at work.
So why can’t you? It’s tough to
control what we can’t see. Recall the 93% rule in Step 1?
Unusual Tip #2: Avoiding a Comfort Zone Trap
The purpose of preparing is to
get you into a comfort zone. Comfort zones create relaxation. Relaxation fosters confidence. But we are controlled by deeply seeded habits. By
relaxing, subconsciously, we tend to fall back into our most basic mannerisms and habits, the very habits most of us have been training to
hide from the interviewer. There is a little slob in all of us.
Will you say one thing while your
body language tells another tale?
Unless your daily, personal
habits are your professional habits, an unlikely event, like Eve, you’ll have two faces. To be believable, your mission is to have your
answers in sync with your body language.
Never get too comfortable. Never
let your guard down.
Unusual Tip #3: How Your Interview Body Language Can Lead to Road
Kill
Ever go on a blind date where you
heard yourself say “You look great” all the while you pray that your body language doesn’t say “You’re ugly”! Unless you are a professional
poker player, you’re toast.
If your verbal and your non
verbal messages are out of sync, interviewers will easily recognize it. It’s called “Faking It!” Should it dawn on you that you are way out of
sync, ask yourself, “Is this what it feels like to be road kill?”
Interview confidence = in sync.
Never let yourself get disjointed.
But what if your
composure is slipping? Well…
